High Adventure Focuses on GCSE Climbing Following Withdrawal of GCSE Cycling
At High Adventure, the safety and wellbeing of young people has always been at the heart of everything we do. Following a comprehensive review of our activities, we have taken the decision to withdraw our GCSE Cycling course and focus our resources, expertise and investment on delivering outstanding GCSE Climbing experiences for schools.
While cycling has been a valued part of our educational offer, we believe concentrating on climbing allows us to provide the highest quality learning experience while maintaining the exceptional safety standards that schools, parents and students expect from High Adventure.
Why Has High Adventure Withdrawn GCSE Cycling?
As an outdoor learning provider, we regularly review all our activities to ensure they continue to meet our standards for educational value, operational quality and participant safety.
Cycling presents a number of risks that can be influenced by factors beyond the control of instructors, including traffic, road conditions, other road users and changing environmental conditions. Although risk can never be completely removed from any adventurous activity, we have concluded that focusing on climbing enables us to deliver a more controlled learning environment while still providing challenge, excitement and valuable personal development opportunities.
This decision reflects our ongoing commitment to putting the safety of young people first while ensuring we continue to offer activities that deliver meaningful educational outcomes.
Our Commitment to GCSE Climbing
High Adventure remains one of the North of England's leading providers of adventure learning and outdoor education. By focusing our efforts on GCSE Climbing, we can continue to develop an exceptional programme for schools looking to provide students with a challenging and rewarding qualification pathway.
Our GCSE Climbing programme helps students develop:
Technical climbing skills
Physical fitness and coordination
Confidence and self-belief
Resilience and perseverance
Problem-solving abilities
Communication and teamwork
Leadership and decision-making skills
The British Mountaineering Council highlights the educational value of climbing within school environments, including the development of movement skills, confidence and lifelong participation in physical activity.
Why Climbing Is an Excellent GCSE Activity
Climbing offers a unique combination of physical, mental and personal development benefits.
Builds Confidence
Students regularly step outside their comfort zones, achieving goals they may initially have believed were beyond their reach. Success on the climbing wall often translates into increased confidence in the classroom and beyond.
Develops Resilience
Every climb presents a challenge. Students learn how to manage setbacks, adapt their approach and keep trying until they achieve success.
Encourages Problem Solving
Climbing is often described as a physical puzzle. Students must analyse routes, make decisions and continually adjust their strategy.
Supports Physical Development
Climbing develops strength, balance, agility, coordination and overall fitness while encouraging healthy participation in outdoor activities.
Investing in the Future of GCSE Climbing
By focusing entirely on climbing, High Adventure can:
Invest further in specialist climbing equipment
Enhance instructor training and development
Expand climbing course availability for schools
Improve teaching and assessment resources
Continue delivering high-quality experiences aligned with GCSE PE requirements
This focused approach ensures we can provide schools with the very best climbing provision available.
